With the Yellow Sea on the east, the Bohai Sea on the west, facing the Shandong Peninsular across a channel on the south , backed up by the vast, abundant in resources, populous and prosperous northeast area and Inner Mongolia of China on the north, being adjacent to Japan, Korea and far east area of Russia, Dalian is within the central region of the Northeast Asian Economic Zone, being a shortcut from ports in the region around the Bohai Sea and along the coastline of the Liaodong Peninsular to outside world, as well as the northeast Asian’s most convenient marine gateway to the Pacific ,even the world as a whole.

Marine, highway ,air, railroad transport and pipeline , the major five means of transportation in Dalian have formed a cubic transportation network which has a considerable capacity. Dalian is speeding up to build a modern transportation system to meet the need of making Dalian the Northeast Asian International Shipment Center.Dalian has been accelerating the construction on highways and formed a highway network, whose main framework is made up of trunk lines link to outside region, which mainly include Shenda (having been rebuilt) and Danda (being building) Express Highway, and state-level, province-level trunk highways. The urban of Dalian connects to its suburb and other areas (except Changhai County) all by express highways and first-class highways. Within Dalian, all towns and townships have access to asphalt roads, while all villages have access to highways. Long-distance buses can reach 100% of towns and townships and 98.9% of villages in Dalian.
